Geneva - Switzerland

With over 120 hotels in the city, Geneva appears to be well prepared for meeting the needs of a tourist onslaught. However, considering the constant flow of business travellers and presidents occupying entire hotel floors, it can be surprisingly difficult to get a room. Simply put, reservations need to be made well in advance. Even the traditional low season is in demand as skiers and boarders head for the Alps over the winter.

When money is no object It cannot be said that Geneva lacks classy accommodation. For those travelling on a princely budget grand Rive Droite hotels such as the Hôtel Beau Rivage, Hôtel Président Wilson, Hôtel des Bergues and the Hôtel d'Angleterre offer superlative 5-star service and plush (if sometimes dated) surroundings, some of the most sophisticated dining in town and sublime lake/alpine views.

Inland and with easy access to International Organizations, the Hôtel Intercontinental welcomes heads of state and business travellers. The hotel's vast "Mission Impossible"-esque lobby is worth spying into, regardless of any intention to stay over.

Expensive Less opulent, but generally speaking more modern, there are a number of well-equipped, highly rated hotels near Cornavin train station. Hôtel Cornavin Genève has been completely revamped and its stylish reception area provides a clue to the sleek transformations within. The hotel is a good inclement weather choice (the Rialto cinema complex can be reached by stepping out the front door and turning right). Other expensive hotels include Hôtel Ambassador, Hôtel Bristol and Hôtel de la Paix.

The Manotel group has seven hotels in the city, most of which are pleasant and centrally located. A fairly safe and unadventurous business or tourist choice. The Hôtel Royal is one of several Manotels in the Pâquis.

Moderate Tourist-class hotels are abundant in the city. Orderly and well-priced options include the Hôtel Astoria, Hôtel Hermitage and Hôtel Suisse.

Inexpensive There are many relatively inexpensive hotels in the city. Most are clean, fairly quiet and with good connections to buses and trains. Some of the better ones in this category include Hôtel Bel Espérance, Hôtel Bernina Genève, Hôtel International & Terminus, Les Hauts-de-Rive, Hôtel Luserna, Hotel Lido and Hôtel Grenil.

Hostels The City Hostel Geneva was opened in 2000. Central, clean, cheap and with no curfew, the hostel is probably the best low-budget option in town. The Tourist Information Office publishes a brochure on budget accommodation called Young People, which details other hostels (including women-only accommodation) in the city.
