What do you mean by a "Connecting Partner"?

The “Connecting Partner” plan allows airlines that operate under a low cost or hybrid model to form an association with Star Alliance, without becoming members of the group. For Alliance customers, this means that the Alliance can offer additional route frequencies and destinations on an extended network.
icon-closed icon_opened Are "Connecting Partners" airlines members of Star Alliance?

No. They have an association with Star Alliance and its member airlines but are not members.

icon-closed icon_opened Will I receive miles/points when I travel on a Connecting Partner flight?
As Connecting Partners are not member airlines, they will not routinely offer mileage or points to customers who are members in a Star Alliance frequent flyer programme. However some of our member airlines are expected to have bilateral agreements with individual Connecting Partners. For details, please check with the frequent flyer programme in which you are a member.
icon-closed icon_opened Are there any advantages offered to Star Alliance Gold status holders when travelling on a Connecting Partner airline?
Each Connecting Partner will offer a tailored set of privileges to Star Alliance Gold status holders when they are travelling on a connecting itinerary. A connecting itinerary is defined as a journey that involves a direct connection between a Star Alliance member airline flight and a flight operated by the Connecting Partner, included in the same reservation.
icon-closed icon_opened What do you mean by a "Connecting Partner flight" or "Connecting Itinerary"?
A connecting itinerary is defined as a journey that involves a direct connection between a Star Alliance member airline flight and a flight operated by the Connecting Partner, included in the same reservation.   A point-to-point flight on the Connecting Partner airline does not qualify as a Connecting Partner flight. The flight on the Connecting Partner airline also does not qualify as a Connecting Partner flight if the customer subsequently travels on a Star Alliance member airline, but is travelling on a separate reservation.
icon-closed icon_opened Why are Gold status privileges on Connecting Partner flights only available in conjunction with a Star Alliance member flight?
The Connecting Partner relationship is all about how the airline works together with Star Alliance. Connecting Partner airlines are seen as an extension to the Star Alliance network that enables customers to reach additional destinations not served by our member airlines or to take advantage of additional services on a particular route.  The airline itself is not a Star Alliance member.
icon-closed icon_opened Are the Gold status privileges standard across all Connecting Partners?
No. Each Connecting Partner airline will offer an individually tailored set of privileges. These may include individual Gold benefits that are offered by all member airlines, such as priority check-in. But they may also include special additional privileges that are unique to that airline.
icon-closed icon_opened Why do I get different privileges on each of the Connecting Partners?
The privileges in each case are aligned with the business proposition of each individual Connecting Partner airline. Connecting Partners are under no obligation to offer all or any of the standard Gold benefits. At the same time, they face no restriction if they would like to and are in a position to offer additional “special” privileges for Gold customers.
icon-closed icon_opened How do I know which privileges are offered by an individual Connecting Partner airline?
The Connecting Partner page gives an overview of the privileges offered by each Connecting Partner. You can also visit the Connecting Partner airline’s own website for additional information.
icon-closed icon_opened Do Connecting Partners meet the safety standards set for Star Alliance member airlines?
Connecting Partners are carefully selected for their fit with the Star Alliance family of member airlines and for their high operating standards. All Connecting Partners are required to have IOSA certification.
icon-closed icon_opened If I travel on a point-to-point flight on a Connecting Partner, can I receive Gold privileges? Do I get miles/points?
No, you will not receive privileges under these circumstances. Star Alliance Gold status customers only receive privileges when they are connecting to or from a Star Alliance member airline flight, booked in the same itinerary. For detailed information on mileage/points  accrual, please contact the Star Alliance frequent flyer programme of which you are a member.

icon-closed icon_opened I am travelling on a Connecting Partner flight but my frequent flyer programme says I will not get miles/points for the flight? Why not?
Connecting Partners are not member airlines in Star Alliance. Arrangements for the earning and burning of miles/points are agreed bilaterally between the individual member airline and the Connecting Partner. The two parties are free to choose whether they enter such a bilateral relationship.
icon-closed icon_opened Are Connecting Partners included in the Round the World product?
No, they will not take part in the Round the World product.
icon-closed icon_opened What about the circle fares and air passes?
No, they will not take part in circle fares or air passes.
icon-closed icon_opened How can I tell whether an airline is a Connecting Partner or a Star Alliance member airline?

Connecting Partners can be recognized by the Connecting Partner Badge.
