A graduate from Sheffield University in 1980, Nigel Turner qualified as an accountant in 1983. Following graduation, Nigel joined the retailer Hepworths, working with ‘Club 24’, the in-house store card, and assisting in the launch of Next. He then spent four years with Northern Foods, one of the major food processors within the UK, before joining bmi.
Nigel was promoted to finance director of bmi in 1994; in this role he was responsible for the entire finance and treasury function within the company, reporting directly to the chief executive officer.Nigel was appointed to the British Midland Airways Limited Board in May 1999.
In 2001 Nigel became a Main Board Director of NATS, the air traffic control provider for UK airspace having been involved in the purchase, by Airline Group Ltd, of a controlling interest from her Majesty’s Government.Nigel resigned his NATS directorship in 2004 but still remains a Director of Airline Group.
In 2002, Nigel was appointed as chief financial officer of the entire British Midland plc group with responsibility for procurement and charter activities within bmi and particular interest in aircraft procurement and airport charges.
Nigel was appointed CEO of British Midland plc in October 2004, a group with a turnover of £830m and over 4600 employees (2004).
