Group Chief Executive Officer, South African Airways
Monwabisi Kalawe joined South African Airways (SAA) in June 2013 as the Group Chief Executive Officer and executive member of the South African Airways Board of Directors.
Kalawe began his career at State Owned Company (SOC), Eskom – South Africa’s electricity supplier as an Engineer-in-Training in 1988, before joining FMCG giant, Nestlé South Africa as a Factory Engineer in 1994.
Kalawe is no stranger to the aviation industry. He previously worked at Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) as the Cape Town International Airport General Manager from 1998 for a period of six years. He then joined Total Facilities Management Company (TFMC) as Chief Operating Officer from 2004 and was appointed as Chief Executive Officer at Denel Munitions from 2006.
In 2008 Kalawe joined Compass Group Southern Africa as Country Managing Director, a position he held for five years; and more recently he was Compass Group’s Executive Chairperson.
Kalawe graduated from Ngcelwane High School in Mdantsane, East London – South Africa in 1982 before going on to complete his BSc (Electrical Engineering) at the University of Natal in 1986.
Kalawe also holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, which he completed in 1998.
