Star Alliance airport terminal in Paris to be ready in 2005
Star Alliance, the airline network for Earth, and Aéroports de Paris (AdP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the objective of transforming Terminal 1 at Charles de Gaulle International Airport into a Star Alliance facility. The agreement envisages that all Star Alliance carriers operating from the airport will have the opportunity to move "under one roof" in CdG 1 after extensive upgrade and renovation works are completed in 2005.
In a joint statement Star Alliance and Aéroports de Paris said, "The detailed and ambitious agreement will facilitate the cooperation between Star Alliance and AdP. The goal is to give Star Alliance customers a smooth travel experience when arriving, departing or transferring at Charles de Gaulle airport.
"By supporting Star Alliance as a competing major airline partnership in France, AdP demonstrates its will to provide for long-term growth capabilities for its customers and thereby cements CdG‘s reputation as one of the premier airports in Europe. The Memorandum of Understanding is designed to allow all Star Alliance member airlines which serve the French capital to move together in the terminal that will feature modern and convenient facilities."
Star Alliance member carriers Air Canada and Austrian Airlines operate from Terminal 2 at CdG. Both carriers have signed the MoU and will determine their position regarding Terminal 1 at a later stage.
Operating under one roof at all major airports within its extensive route network is a primary goal of Star Alliance since short connecting times and seamless service at airports rank highest on the priority list of today’s global travellers.
The agreement commits AdP to provide high-quality facilities that will support interconnectivity between the Star Alliance carriers within a "mini-hub" environment. This includes check-in desks, lounges, baggage areas and offices. Star Alliance, for its part, will have to guarantee a significant growth in traffic in order to optimize utilization of allocated space and resources.
Star Alliance member carriers serving Charles de Gaulle airport are Air Canada, All Nippon Airways – ANA, Austrian Airlines, bmi british midland, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines – SAS, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International, United Airlines and VARIG Brazilian Airlines. Together, they accounted for a total of 5.5 million passengers through the Paris airport in 2000 - a figure which is expected to increase to 7.5 million in 2005 when the refurbished CdG1 terminal is scheduled to become a Star Alliance center of operation.
